By the Stars of Saint Matthew is a love story set in a farmhouse against a backdrop of 1930s Depression-era gangland. Kip Haley, a veteran of WWI and a member of Red Foley's gang, seeks refuge from himself and his wounds. Iris Wellman, a small-town veterinarian, seeks to heal him and herself.
